My Favorite Actors (2017 Edition)

A year ago I wrote this blessed post, My Favorite Actors, and while it still rings 94% true, there are some updates, some new additions and some salty comments I’d like to add to the mix. And besides. It’s never a problem to stop and appreciate my favorite actors.

Boy-howdy, how do I even organize this list?

I’ll make two lists: The Favorite-Because-Their-Acting-Is-Absolutely-Incredible List and the Favorite-Because-You-Are-A-Cinnamon-Roll List.

YOUR ACTING IS ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE YOU ARE BASICALLY THE MALE VERSION OF MERYL STREEP:

Stanley Tucci

stanley-tucci-547474-1-402.jpg

Where do I even begin? He can do anything, this man. He embodies each character so differently and so specifically. I’m continually blown away by his acting. Talk about setting the bar TOO HIGH BECAUSE I’LL NEVER BE THAT GOOD. Notable Roles: Caesar Flickerman (The Hunger Games), Maestro Cadenza (Beauty and the Beast), Abraham Erskine (Captain America: The First Avenger), Paul Child (Julie & Julia).

Iain De Caestecker

ac167c889b232988fb9974d795d25c9f.jpg

So I’ve only seen Iain in one thing- Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. But boy, can he act. He absolutely kills the role. And in a tv show where scripts are dependably mediocre, it’s hard to showcase your acting abilities. He’s pretty much the only character I cared about. Disclaimer: *Maybe* that’s because he has a Scottish accent. We’ll never know. Notable Roles: Leo Fitz (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.)

Benedict Cumberbatch

benedict-cumberbatch-november-2016-ss01.jpg

There was a time when I couldn’t claim to know Benedict was a good actor because I had only seen him in one role. But as I saw him in other films it became clear that I wasn’t biased to a character- he really can act. Notable Roles: Alan Turing (The Imitation Game), Khan (Star Trek: Into Darkness), Stephen Strange (Dr. Strange), Smaug (The Hobbit).

Leonardo DiCaprio

This man just doesn’t stop. A lot of the people who hit their prime in the 90’s aren’t big names any more, but not Leo Di. Let’s just give him a whole bunch of honorary Oscars for his underappreciated roles. Notable Roles: Jack Dawson (Titanic), Dom Cobb (Inception), Frank Abagnale Jr. (Catch Me If You Can).

Jesse Eisenberg

Although normally I equate great acting with versatility and variety, Jesse is an exception. He plays a niche extremely well, which is why he’s earned a spot here. One thing that really stands out to me with his acting is his body language- very precise and measured in every role, and it brings a lot to the character. Notable Roles: J. Daniel Atlas (Now You See Me), Lex Luthor (Batman V. Superman).

CINNAMON ROLL TOO GOOD, TOO PURE FOR THIS WORLD YOU ARE A BEAM OF SUNSHINE IN A WORLD OF DARKNESS AND SHADOW:

Sebastian Stan

The day I see this man win an Oscar is the day he moves from the Cinnamon Roll list to the Meryl Streep list. I’m too biased about his acting abilities to judge fairly myself. I love Sebastian and I think his acting is incredible- but I’ve only seen him in a few movies. So for now… cinnamon roll. Notable Roles: Bucky Barnes (Captain America), Chris Beck (The Martian).

Dylan O’Brien

Acting- 70/100. Photogenic-ness? 100/100. And you know, his acting is improving as time goes on. Even from The Maze Runner to Scorch Trials his acting improves (as does his photogenic-ness). Notable Roles: Thomas (The Maze Runner)

Josh Hutcherson

i know its a picture of peeta okay shhhh

Josh Hutcherson is the most cinnamon roll of this entire list. He is the literal personification of a cinnamon roll. Oh, and his acting is incredible too. Some actors are good at action, some are good at comedy, and Josh is good at bREAKING MY HEART INTO A MILLION TINY PIECES. Notable Roles: Peeta Mellark (The Hunger Games).

Hayden Christiansen

Let’s be honest, no one even knows what Hayden Christiansen looks like these days. But ‘these days’ aren’t the ones I care about anyway- Hayden Cinnamonsen in the early 2000s is the only one that matters. You may or may not have figured it out by now, but my weakness is characters tURnING EvIL!!! Notable Roles: Anakin Skywalker (Star Wars).

Now I need a third list just for THE SUPER COOL GANG SEVEN MILLION TIMES BETTER THAN YOU:

Jai Courtney

I had to include two pictures because he’s uNrEcOgNIzAbLEY dIFfErENT. Notable Roles: Kyle Reese (Terminator: Genisys), Eric (Divergent), Captain Boomerang (Suicide Squad).

Zachary Quinto

Well first let’s just take a second to appreciate that h a i r that is p e r f e c t i o n. Annd then another second to appreciate his sass™ as Master Spock. Notable Roles: Spock (Star Trek).

Lee Pace

This man exudes #royalty. Look at that face. That’s the face of a king. Notable Roles: Thranduil (The Hobbit), Ronan (Guardians of the Galaxy).

Bruce Greenwood

Coolest old dude ever. Talk about aging gracefully. Notable Roles: Captain Pike (Star Trek), President (National Treasure: Book of Secrets).

Anthony Mackie

I think I can literally see the swag rolling off him like nobody’s business. Notable Roles: Sam Wilson (Captain America).

Jonathan Groff

Equal parts drop of sunshine and sassmaster. Notable Roles: King George (Hamilton: An American Musical), Kristoff (Frozen).

Chris Pine

And last, we have to finish with my twin, Chris Pine. As you can see, I have declined to include a picture of Chris “Old Man” Pine, with a grizzly grey beard. Those pictures exist, but I refuse to acknowledge their existence. Chris Pine is… amazing. As one Pinterest user so aptly put it, “What did we do to deserve Chris Pine?”

I HAVE A LOT OF FAVORITE ACTORS, OKAY?

What about you? Who are your favorite actors?

  1. Stanley Tucci and Benedict Cumberbatch are DEFINITELY on my list. So is Leonardo DiCaprio. The rest of the list is rather extensive. (Tom Hanks, Martin Freeman, Michael Caine, Alan Rickman…) But I will spare you the details.
This is a great post! I loved seeing the differences (and similarities) to the previous one. Picking favorite actors can be so hard because there are so many different types of characters and actors and we love them all for different reasons. I like how how had the categories. That helps. 🙂
