A Dear Evan Hansen Appreciation Post

Can we talk about how the things that resonate with us the most are the times when other people reveal their deepest fears, personal flaws, or mistakes?

Yeah. That’s important.

I wouldn’t say I struggle with anxiety, but I definitely have fears. Lately I’ve been realizing that I have fears of being inadequate- shall we visit the last few lines of my favorite DEH song, Words Fail?

Cause what if everyone saw?
What if everyone knew?
Would they like what they saw?
Or would they hate it too?
Will I just keep on running away from what’s true?

All I ever do is run
So how do I step in
Step into the sun?

Just knowing that someone else out there wrote those words- someone else can put into words the fear that I share. I’m not alone.

Oh, did you say You Will Be Found?

Dear Evan Hansen is a really important story, and I could go on and on about issues and reliability and anxiety and on and on and on, but now I’m going to talk about the fun stuff:

Beautiful fanart. Feels everywhere. Great harmonies. And now we have a moment of silence to fully appreciate the richness of Ben Platt’s amazing voice:

Broadway never ceases to amaze me. Sometimes it’s because of the spectacle or the quality of the production. Sometimes it’s the voices, blowing me away. Most of the time it’s because it’s something never done before. Now it’s because it’s a story about… me. I mean, it’s not like I can relate to Christine Daaé.

But Evan Hansen, a teenager who feels imperfect? Definitely. We need more art like this in our society. Art that reminds us- we’re never alone.

  4. Agh, my friend recommended this to me! My one love is HAMILTON, but she told me that the three popular musicals are Hamilton, Heathers, and Dear Evan Hansen. I’ll have to listen to this one!

  5. Hamilton is LIFE. I’ve heard so much about Heathers, but I haven’t listened to that one yet. And YES LISTEN TO EVAN HANSEN AND CRY.
